Alex is currently in the second year of her PhD at Brock University under the supervision of Dr. Kiyoko Gotanda. She currently studies methods of communication in aquarium and zoo penguins. Her research interests are in the areas of behaviour, cognition, evolution, and conservation. She hopes to run her own research group after the completion of her PhD. Alex grew up in Essex county and has always had a love for animals. Through her time working in the Mennill Sound Analysis Lab she discovered that research was her passion and started her journey to becoming a principle investigator. The time it took to learn about these career options as well as the difficulties she faces as a disabled woman in science inspired Alex to form the Future of Science Network.
